The 18th National Symposium of Theater in Academe. On Emotion, Pathos, and the Human Condition in Theater and Film

Publié le 26 mars 2026 Mis à jour le 1 avril 2026

Les 26 et 27 mars 2026, le prestigieux National Symposium of Theater in Academe, organisé à la Washington and Lee University, consacrera sa 18ᵉ édition au thème : « Emotion, Pathos, and the Human Condition in Theater and Film ».

Abstract
While it was an essential element of a film's narrative structure from its very beginnings in cinema, the song has constantly evolved according to modern and/or postmodern trends, occupying a prominent place in all audiovisual media. The catchphrase introducing a song in one of the first talkies, The Jazz Singer (1927) :"You ain't heard nothing yet," has consistently confirmed the relevance of a sung element in the reinvention of an emotional environment. The keynote address will therefore explore some key stages in the reappropriation of a universe that is initially familiar and recognizable to the viewer through songs that assert a singularity intended to immerse them in powerfully subjective emotional worlds. The presentation will focus on the classic Hollywood use of the song-character, some lesser-known modern uses from Eastern European cinema , experimental cinema, the irruption of songs in music videos and Euro-American TV series as an affirmation of buried singularities , including some cases of contemporary French films by female directors that continually question the difficult transition from a Cavellian "world viewed," to a world where the exemplary nature of listening to a key song as a emotion catalyst reigns supreme
