A seminar by Rob Gallagher, Lecturer in Digital Media Industries at King's College London, focusing on the difficulties of video game development in relation to the crisis in contemporary economic, political and technological models.
Whether we think of the hype around new graphics hardware, or the hope that they are evolving into a brave new interactive artform, it seems that videogames are forever about to fulfil their promise. But what if gaming's future has already failed to arrive? And what if this very failure renders the medium ideally equipped for a context where better futures are becoming harder to imagine?
This seminar will consider gaming's growing pains in relation to a wider loss of faith in existing economic and political paradigms - and in the digital technologies that were supposed to connect, enlighten and empower us. It will also offer a chance to go hands-on with games that use elements drawn from gaming’s past to question the terms on which we imagine the future.
Rob Gallagher teaches across a range of media, gaming and digital culture modules within King’s College London (Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries). He is particularly interested in pedagogical approaches that combine creative practice with critical analysis, and in online pedagogy. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Association.
